so I was playing a standard firefight match when my doorbell rang, I knew I was going to be gone for a while so I turned off my 360 by pressing the button on the face of the console. when I came back and turned on the console I had the e74 error.

I'm a long time reader first time poster of afterdawn, so I knew to search before posting. But so far I've found very convoluted results. Some say that the problem is the av cord, others say it's the gpu, and others say a chip near the av cord port. I'd just like to finish my daily challenges, please help :(

i very much doubt that you can blame the game.why did you turn off the game like that?the reason you are getting mixed replies is because they are all right answers.
try a new a/v cord 1st as it is cheapest and easiest, did any of your games start juddering or freezing recently?rrod could have been on the way anyway.

E74 is not a freaking cable. It's the same thing as the 3 red lights. Send it to M$ for repair.

Modking30 is right, it's an issue with broken solder: http://xbox-experts.com/errorcode/E74/1022/

just to add another confirmation ----> It's a pretty typical RRoD if your system is less than 3 years old send it to M$, if it is > 3 years old do the x clamp replacement and/or re flow.

Oh and... It wasn't the game, it was bound to happen anyways. And never just turn your xbox off - quit to dashboard first, wait for the disc to slow down then turn it off. That wont cause a RRoD but it will destroy your drive.

PSP-modded, ps2 fat-modded w/fliptop and swap magic, PS3-YLoD, DS Lite w/ Acekard 2i, Xbox 360 - JTAGed with no dvd-rom

dumbest thing I have ever heard. This isn't a PC that has an operating system that could corrupt. Shutting down in the middle of a game will do NOTHING. For as much as reflowing costs and the success, I'd buy a new box. Reballing is the way to go. Most people on here think a heatgun is a reflow....which isn't. True reflowing consists of a reflow station, and xray to confirm the solder has resealed

Calm down bud, I think you're confused...

Either go back and read what I posted or do some research. Never said it would corrupt the OS or cause a RRoD, but it is fact it will stress out the motor in the drive and eventually break it.

Reflow station: hot air being blown onto the solder melts the cracks back together

I guess you can pretend it isn't a "true reflow" but it does the same thing, regardless if you x-ray it or not

Technically a heat gun (and even an oven bake) is a reflow. Anything you do involving hot air, regardless of air source, that melts and relows the solder, is a reflow. But I think we can agree that heat guns and ovens and towels can't and don't do the job as well a a real reflow machine. Especially towels.

Does a true reflow consist of using flux too?
