HDD Platter Swap

My 60gb HDD stopped working due to dualhead malfuntion (platter is unharmed). My wife got me a 20gb HDD for temp replacement. Both are official MS Hitachi HDDs. My question is: can the platters be swapped so I can use my 60gb again?

When we use do that with PC HDs it had to be the extact same drive model and everything. so i would assume the same with a xbox drive.

If you did get it working, i wouldn't expect it to work for long. Usally it's done to get off data and then moved to a good HD. Those things really need to be taken apart in a clean room and sealed. any dust in them would cause issue and make the drive die quicker.

Hmmm... what about replacing the whole head mechanism? I have everything needed and access to a controlled clean room.

it's possiable if they're the same. i would still worry about the reliablety of a opened hard drive. Again when we did this you would basicly ruin 2 HDs because the data was worth it, and it would all be moved to a 3rd new HD. so it's kind of up to you and how comfortable you are with this process.

If i was in your spot. i would mod a Western Digital laptop HD in the 60gig case, recover your profile from live, redownload any DLC and forget about any game saves. i think in the long run that would be more ideal.
