I know that floating around on the Internet there are tons of tutorials on modding 360's... But that's the problem. There is too many of them, and I don't know which one works for my system, and which one doesn't. And on top of which, I have other questions that I would like to ask as well. So that's why I am here. I hope this doesn't get my banned here, it's not my intention. I don't need any links to anything other than possibly a tutorial or FAQ, it just a few basics that I need a hand with.
First off, I'm familiar with modding as I have a modded wii, modded psp's, modded a ps1, ps2 and OG xbox and a whole slew jail token apple stuff, so I'm not a complete noob....
Here's my questions:
--- 1) I have a black 360 elite (not slim) that was the first gen of the elites. Do I need a modchip? or can I just flash the dvd-drive firmware? I know about different fw for different drives, just curious if that is all I need?
--- 2) If I need a modchip, which one works the best? Name is fine, I can find where to get them.
--- 3) If I just need to flash the FW, is there a good, WORKING FAQ, walkthrough or tutorial that someone can point me to? (please pm me if the link can't be posted... Assuming there is one.)
--- 4) I rarely play games on LIVE, but I do use it to DL demo's, addons, and updates. Will I still be able to do that post-mod? (I heard some mod-chip had a switch to turn it off so it didn't get detected).
--- 5) Also relating to #4, I do buy XBLA games off live, would I still be able to do that as well? I.e. Can you only be "detected" when trying to play a backup disc?
--- 6) Is there special software I should use to create my backups / burn games? (mac/pc doesn't matter, I have both)
Anyway, that's really it for now, though I may have more after some replies start rolling in. Thanks in advance for your help... I'll just be over here in the corner with my fingers crossed hoping I don't get banned for asking all of this...

you need to start with jungleflasher, read the tutorial that is inside, depending on what drive you have you may need tools, all games should be ran through abgx to make sure they are patched properly, if you maintain that you should be live safe, there is a new disc format that they just released, there is no solution for it yet but it is in the works, most games starting with driver sanfransisco uses this disc format.

It doesn't matter if you have an Elite. The consoles are the basically the same. What matters is the model of DVD drive inside.

No one uses modchips. Everybody flashes. You probably couldn't find a modchip at any mod supplier nowadays anyway.

Jungle Flasher. It's on their site.

Again, no modchips. It's all about flashing. And yes, a flashed 360 still does does everything a stock 360 does (including all Live features).

XBLA games? See the previous answer. You can be detected at any given moment (on Live, off Live, backup disc, retail disc, no disc, etc)

Xbox Backup Creator / ImgBurn.

While you're in that corner read up on how to flash/rip/burn.
