Ok, this is my first post here but I'm lost as to what this could be, maybe someone here can help. The other day I had got home from work and I decided to play Dead Space for a little bit. I turned on my 360 and I was greeted by a very sad looking 360 logo, like seriously sad. If it had been a smiley icon it would have been one with a frown, and giant bloody tears running down it's cheeks.
Basically what is going on is any 3d objects on the screen have some weird graphic glitches. The glitches range from straight dark to transparent lines running through to static like dots encompassing the whole object that are also black or transparent. It was fine when I turned it off the day before and the next day there it was. My first thought was the video card had probably fried out but I would assume that if it had then why are the 2d rendered objects not affected? I checked the cords and the connections and everything seemed fine. I checked my tv with other consoles and it wasn't the tv. Now here's something that just baffled me. Yesterday, around 9 in the morning my brother was on it checking some stuff on xbox live and we had a power surge that kicked out the power to the entire house. When the power came back on and I turned the 360 the lines were gone as well as the static as if it had never happened, but it only lasted for about 3 minutes and then it came back. I checked Microsoft's site and of course they are going to charge me over 100 bucks plus shipping there and back for them to fix my problem and I was hoping maybe it was something I could fix myself. It's not even 2 years old yet but my warranty has expired. It saddens me that something so expensive crapped out before I even had it for 2 years. I've never had problems like this with any console before.
Anyway, thanks in advance to any responses. I really appreciate anyone taking the time to give me any insight at all to the problem.
I'm afraid RRoD/E74 is around the corner. Microsoft covers RRoD/E74 for 3 years from the purchase date. So you should still be covered. Give Microsoft a call at 1-800-4MY-XBOX. Just tell them you have RRoD or E74 and they will gladly replace it for you, for free.
if your out of warranty there are good methods of repair now and they work 95% of the time i have done many.
but take my advice if you are ou of war then act quikley for the best result

Do you know if their new online repair service is worth using? Would it just be better to call them? I absolutely despise calling microsoft. I remember trying to cancel my xbox live gold membership and I sat on the phone for 2 hours being transfered around and being put on hold.

I've used the online repair service a few times, it's a lot easier than trying to understand some of the people from ms support (it took me about 6 hours to set up live for the first time following ms support directions).

Yea, there customer service is definitely a nightmare experience, it's almost as bad as dell. I guess I'm just gonna go for it. I haven't received the RROD yet but I wonder if I can just put that down anyway and send it in. So far everyone I talked to has told me basically the same thing, that I'll be getting the RROD pretty soon just based on the problem. I guess this problem is connected directly to the RROD/E74. Hopefully they don't just send it back and call me a liar.
I'm sure they have some kind of diagnostics to tell that your XBOX 360 is suffering from an issue. So they will replace it and send you a refurbished, maybe new, console.
