Take a look over the Jungle Flasher tutorial. The tutorial covers the 78/79 drive.
Visit http://www.jungleflasher.net or the tutorial linked in my signature.

Go ahead and put all 4 into the firmware folder. The 4 different firmwares are for different locations where the key is found. Once you dump the 78 firmware, Jungle Flasher will automatically identify which of the 4 to use.

You are for sure it is a Hitachi 78?
If it is infact a Hitachi 78, it is spoofed as a BenQ.

That is definitely your Hitachi. Look up to the right hand corner where it says "Drive", there is a drop down list. Do you see the Hitachi there?

That is probably the DVD drive in your PC.
EDIT Sorry, I mis-read your post. Make sure this:
Vendor: HL-DT-ST
Name: DVD-ROM GDR3120L
f/w rev: 0078
reserved: OBMAB 06/05/25
Is selected on port properties and eject your drive and leave it ejected. Click "Send Mode B" and it will close your drive. Give it about 30 seconds and in the right hand corner click "refresh" until it finds your Hitachi drive.

Try refreshing a couple of times. Are you using WinAPI or PortIO.
Can you post the log here so I can take a look.
