Hitachi not reading disc not modded

Hi I have a Hitachi and its not reading any disc but I can still hear it turning.
So I have pulled it apart, so Im thinking of trying to fix the dvd rom or replacing it. If I have to replace it, will this give me trouble trying to reconise it on the computer?

You will need to dump the firmware from the Hitachi and spoof it to the new drive (Pref BenQ). You may as well try the POT calibration trick before hand, has fixed many Hitachi's

Also, does it play originals? Did this problem gradual appear or did it happen all at once?
