How can I get my backups working again on my 360?

I had my xbox flashed 18 months ago and I've been using it ever since then to play many games. BlackOps worked until some new update was released ealier this year, but everything else still worked. Now I've updated the dashboard again and it's killed it totally, I saw the post on these forums about it a day late.

Is there anything I can do to safely use it again online or do I have to wait for this new software to come out before I can do anything?

Why do so many people update without checking first to see if it's safe to do so?

Anyway it looks like you gotta wait until at least LT 1.9 firmware is released.
