How to burn backups on memorex

So after a bunch of coasters I finally managed to get cheap memorex media working without any coasters, it took a bit of tinkering but I finally figured out what I was doing wrong.
After you get your hands on an image file, you should have a .iso and a .dvd files if you have just the .iso use abgx for all your quality checking, patching, stealthing, .dvd making needs. It's fairly strait forward and already covered in other tutorials. Now specific to Memorex.
First off in most tutorials saying to burn at 2.4x, 2x, or the lowest possible speed, they're usually talking about Verbatim discs. Verbatim discs are able to support these burn speeds, Memorex aren't. Look at the packaging, if it says 8x and only 8x, then burn it at 8x.
2nd off use a burning app that supports burning .dvd files *Don't burn the .iso!!!* it has to be the .dvd, I started off using PowerISO to burn the .iso's and in the end the XBox wouldn't recognize the games. Then I tried ImgBurn to burn the .dvd files, but for some reason ImgBurn hates Memorex and would crap out at 50% when switching to the 2nd layer. However PowerISO proved that these discs weren't coasters and it wasn't my dvd drive's fault ImgBurn just doesn't like Memorex, not sure why.
So finally I settled on CloneCd which supports .dvd file burning and is able to burn on both layers. Remembered to burn at 8x, and finally I had some playable backups.
Hopefully this saves someone from making the same mistakes as me.

In my experiences with Memorex and ImgBurn, you need to set the layer break to 1913759. Your problem could be between ImgBurn and your particular burner when using Memorex. I have made only as many Memorex coasters as I have with Verbatim.
I only mention this because ImgBurn is free and CloneCD is not. Good guide, though. It was straight forward and direct to the point.

And all of this headache could have been solved by not being so cheap and just purchase Verbatim discs...

I'm not even sure why anyone would want to backup their games on expensive discs these days seeing we're going to have to reburn our library soon.

Seriously? Verbs can be bought on sale all the time for $20~$24 a 20 pack. If someone can't afford $1/disc then they shouldn't have a 360 to begin with.

Yeah I know especially since you aren't saving a damn dime on games to begin with. Don't be an idiot. The dye in memorex is crap. yes you can get them to work, but the quality is crap which is why they are cheap. Verbs are top grade quality and anyone here starting a guide on "How to use memorex" is going to be bashed since everyone here clearly only mods their drives for backups because their kids scratch their games.

The point is that verbatim discs, when used in a decent burner, do not turn into coasters when burning 360 games. It doesn't necessarily mean they are the best dvds they just work the best for 360 games. It's all about the ink. I remember back when i was burning gamecube games i had to use Ritek dvds or they came out shit and Ritek wasn't exactly the best on the market.
When you use Memorex you will have mixed results. On some spindles you might end up having two thirds of them coaster and the next spindle the results could be better or even worse. Companies like Memorex outsource to media vendors. You might end up with Cmc, Ricoh, Prodisc, Infodisc or Ritek to name a few.
It is also important to have a half decent burner for 360 games. Your burner might do great for burning movies but 360 games are more sensitive. They have a smaller margin for error than most images.

Truthfully, it's more about your PC and burner than it is about the disc brand.
I'm not saying to use CADs, but CADs can be burned just as easily as Verbatims, assuming you got decent tools to do the job.
The problem with CADs isn't that they can't have 360 games burnt to the successfully, it's more that:
- You need better equipment to burn CADs than Verbatims.
- CADs deteriorate quicker than Verbatims.
- CADs are inconsistent in their manufacturing process.
- etc.
I've burned about about 6 or 7 different brands of CADs with rarely a fail. A lot of those discs stopped working after a few years. All of my Verbs work to this day.
My advice to noobs: Learn to burn with Verbs (you'll have less headaches and no CAD issues). After you perfect your technique, try CADs if you like.
**Note** CAD = Cheap Ass Disc
