How To Cancel Xbox Live

I'm tried of Xbox Live and want to cancel it. My credit card is linked to my account. The site does not help at all or the dashboard ...
I know only 3 methods
1. Get banned (Not going to)
2. Call Support, not really wanting to. I'm assuming that 1-800-4MY-XBOX is for Canada too ???

2. Go down and click Manage Account.
3. Click on Memberships.
4. From here, you can change the membership status of the account from Gold to Silver (Free).
This method will make your account Silver (free) after the billing cycle.
Am I missing any other methods. Does the third method actually works.
EDIT: I read in a forum, that you lose your achievements and gamer score once you cancel your account. Please tell me that is not true.

well duh!.. you cancel your account.. they delete it..
easy method to cancel.. just inform your credit card company to cease payments from xx date.

umm, no.
i canceled mine after i graduated college because where i moved to i didn't have the internet and felt no need to keep paying for something i wasn't going to use. all you need to do is call them up and tell them you want to remove your card from your LIVE account. your live will continue to work until your current billing cycle is up, and then you will have LIVE no more.
you do not lose your game saves, gamer score, previously downloaded stuff, or anything at all. and if you do decide to join LIVE sometime down the road like i did, all you need to do is either put your card back on your account, or use prepaid cards like i do.

What do you mean by billing cycle? So, do you mean it is the end of xbox live subscription. Won't they auto-renew it (I bought my subscription with my credit card).

your billing cycle depends on what auto renewal you bought, if you bought (1 month, 3 month, year). but im pretty sure when i had MS delete my credit card from my account, it lasted until the end of that month and then i had no more LIVE.
and if you delete your card from your account, they have no way of auto-renewing it.
