Modded or not, you can upgrade your hard drive with a 3rd party one for much cheaper than you can buy an 'official' MS HDD.
To answer your other questions, no, it is not as simple as just popping the new hard drive into the box. It isn't overly complicated, though.
I believe the way it works is that you have to buy the exact model of HD that MS uses for the 120GB and then format it in a special way. There are tutorials for this. Sorry, I don't remember the name of the drive or exactly what you have to do.
I'm sure somebody around here will know more about this than I will. Hopefully that will get you started.
unless you're just looking for the challenge i suggest getting one from ebay for about 70 bucks. i've done it for both my 360's and work like a charm.
if you want to go the wetern digital route 'just to do it'... do some searching... there's alot of info out there already and it hasn't changed in the past few months.

Well it was from a seller who had like 3,000 positive feedback.
Then when I got it I took it apart and it had a legit HDD in it and it's in a 120GB casing.
yea... one of mine came with the transfer cable and still in the original package unopened.
the other one was 'official' and came by itself wrapped in bubble wrap in a box. it was sent from hong hong though so it has to be real deal right? right?
Becareful if your going to use the data transfer cable to shift everything to the new drive as it will delete the saves etc on the old one, you'd be better off using a minispy from talismoon,or some other method
