I have a few games that are not verified, if my console is not hooked up to live, is it safe to play? i have intentions to take it on live a little later but not right now.

Your xval might be clean, but you could be red flagged for the next ban hammer (server side). I thought the same thing as you with ssv1, and I got banned in '09. Modking30 knows what he is talking about. Some people here have still never been banned since launch, very few members. Those who have survived keep up to date with what's going on in the mod scene. I rarely play my 360 online, but I make sure to come here and check if anything is happening like bans, new firmware, new implemented firmware checks (ssv3), etc.. Nobody is immune to a ban, unless you're only ever going to use stock firmware.

Are you really serious? Don't be an idiot. All games must be SSV2 to be safe on live. Just because you think you aren't flagged means nothing. C4eva has told use to patch SSV2 or LT is pretty much worthless.
