i have done several by updating with the usb, i have had no issues, i do not think it reads the firmware in any manner, it was just suggested it was best to flash back to stock before doing it.

It takes all of an extra 5 minutes to do the second flash, (unless it's a Lite-On then it's maybe 10 extra minutes, maximum). What gets me is that you know how to flash, and yet you're still complaining about a few extra minutes to make sure it's right.

AS far as I know, its supposed to flash you back to stock hence the reason for LT 1.9. Honestly, if the usb method worked 1.9 wouldn't have been released. You cannot run LT 1.1 on the most current dash plain and simple. You need 1.9 to play new ap2.5 games and be on live.

i just did the update via usb, it flashed the drive back to stock and then i updated it lt1.9, his question was, is it necessary to flash it back to stock first, i personally do not think it is because the update does not check the firmware that is on it, all it does is flash it to stock.

yes, i know how to flash, i'm fine with updating to LT+ 1.9 and 2.0 after that, i don't want to flash to stock unless i absolutely have to, because the way my living room is set up, i have to put my hot running xbox, open ona leather chair, and the fan gets so loud trying to cool the damn thing down i'm afraid it will shutdown or error before the firmware is properly installed.
yeah, that was some VERY scary shit to go through.
especially when it was my first time doing hardware mods ever.
it's a LiteON 74850c

I gotta see a picture of this one. Larry the cable guy? Love to see you catch your chair on fire. Why would you ever have to have an xbox sitting on a chair?

I would say yes because if you update while still on LT1.1, what's to say that it doesn't flag you before flashing you to the new stock firmware? But if you flash back to the original stock firmware, then update, there wouldn't be a flag, because it sees your firmware as legitimate before it re-flashes you to the new stock. The extra step only takes a few extra minutes.
