I just got this for Christmas.
My router works fine, internet via ethernet cable and wireless both work fine..
When I hook it to my XBOX 360 it says there isn't a connection, to turn off and on my router. So I keep trying, and then it'll come up saying it can't obtain my IP address.
I'm pretty computer literate, I ran Linux with Terminal and everything when I was only 10 or 11.
I'm not to good with configuring internet connections though, so I pretty much need a guide.
I tried entering in all my stuff manually..
How can I fix this?
This really makes me mad, cuz I wanna play on LIVE.. ):

First of all, make sure your physical connection is good (check the status light on your router/modem/switch). If you're doing this through wifi, go to ethernet. If you're using ethernet and your status light is good, then we can only assume the xbox hardware is not the problem. If you're using a DSL service, make sure that if you have to enter your DSL information onto the xbox, go ahead and do it. If you do not get a status light after connecting the ethernet cable, we can assume that the cable is bad or the xbox ethernet port is bad. Check with a known working cable. I know this is basic, but sometimes we can forget when we're exited about something. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply!

The cable light is on on the modem, and I am using a DSL connection.
So I entered my Username and password to access the internet in my 360.

It still can't obtain my IP address. I'm lossttt.

in your network settings press the blue button to rerset everything.
then set everything to automatic setting .turn off your abox and modem.
turn back on your modem then your xbox and try to connect.
also when your xbox is turning on look at the back of the modem and see if the ligh is flashing wher your abox cable is pluged in if it is it trying to communicate with the modem so its just a matter of messing around with the settings.

Is your router setup to assign IP address' automatically. For example, if you plug in a new PC in to your router, do you need to manually assign your computer a IP address?

Try another patch cable. Could be that simple.

I've tried more than one cable, so it isn't the cable.
I did the suggestion of reseting all the settings and turning off the modem and 360, then turning them back on. It didn't work.
However, my internet modem is set to obtain the IP automatically. I do not have a static IP address.

What do you mean your internet modem? You need a router for this to work. Do you have a router?

try another 360 then at least you can isolate the problem to yours if that one works.

Have you done the internet test on the 360. Let us know where it fails, that will help find the issue a little better

This is a strange problem, although I have seen it before, usually though, it fixes itself and eventually the box goes online. Now that we've established that the hardware is working (using the status lights on the modem), go into your router/modem and see if you can check to see every device connected to your modem. From your earlier post, we should see a couple of computers, wi-fi and ethernet. Check to make sure one of the devices is the xbox. If your xbox shows up, we can assume the handshaking is good. The only thing I can think of to do is to remove all other devices to make sure there is no interference from another device. Good luck!

When was it it established? His 360 is not getting an IP from the router.

Try setting a static IP on the router (manual) and see what happens.

Doesn't work, now it told me not to set it to a static IP on the console.
Bugs, bugs, bugs.

Did you make sure the static IP is a different one ex. PC - 192.168.1.103 and xbox 192.168.104

Also try ipconfig /all via command prompt just to make sure you put in the correct subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS correctly.

also if you need some help email me at dsenatore@sganj.com

Do what "fabianc21" says and see where the test stops when it's testing the connection. It would be helpful to know exactly where it is faulting. One way to eliminate your xbox as the fault would be to take your box to someone else's house and see if you can get it online. Have you tried that yet?

It stops on the first stage, actually connecting to the internet.

Also, when I entered the IP in manually, I used the same one as the PC.
Let me add a number to it an I'll reply!
