I just bought a 360 today after several years of patiently waiting for good games to be released for the wii. On my wii I soldered in a Wiikey and have homebrew all set up. I'm not averse to tearing apart a console and putting it back together.

That said, I'm looking to modify my xbox to also play backups of games. I understand that there are not mod chips for the xbox, but that mods are performed by flashing the optical drive firmware.

I would be most grateful if someone could point me to some general instructions as to how I would go about modifying my xbox. I know that modifying the firmware often precludes a ban from xbox live. Is there any way to avoid such a fate?

how about using that nifty search bar to find a tutorial??? and only way to avoid being banned is not modding your console.
