I'm about to perform some surgery on my xbox using this method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxWgd8R06lo

Just Thought I'd double check with the pros here that it is indeed this simple (if your Lite On model is pre 2009) and that you don't need any extra tools or anything.

I'm a little nervous doing this. Confirmation (or any other advice) would be appreciated.

Thanks.

That vid is outdated. There's newer firmware and software. Your best bet is to go to Jungleflasher.net and download the tutorial. It's an interactive tut and will walk you through step by step.

It's only a few months old. Is it that big of a deal? It's a lot easier for me to follow a 5 minute youtube than get into all the technicalities with a huge PDF file.

Is the method in the video legit at least?

No the method in the video is wrong and outdated

Like I said, there's newer firmware and a newer Jungleflasher.

Have you even looked at the pdf? Not to be rude, but if someone can't follow a tut as easy as the JF guide, then they may be better off paying someone to flash it for them.

Is it at least correct in saying that Lite On drives before 2009 can be flashed with a SATA cable alone, and without need of probes and kit kats and any other external components?

Actually following a PDF would be easier than following a video.

Never mind. Took a look at the PDF and it would appear so.

For a 'step by step' guide, they sure left huge blank on what PortIOXX is, what it does and where to get it...

Guess I'll just google it.

Actually, no. And certainly not this one for the reason I just remarked.

Anyway, opinions etc.

Must not have looked at the guide as there's a big picture that shows portio is already included in the jungleflasher download on page 7 and page 9 shows you, again with a picture, how to verify that portio is running.

Have you opened your 360 yet to see which drive you have?

I saw the pictures but was left with the assumption that it was a program requiring separate installation, as was the case with JungleFlasher.0.1.67, which I had just started tinkering with earlier.

Glad to see they simplified the process.

Not yet. Gonna make sure I'm confident enough with my knowledge of all the intricate steps this procedure calls for before I even bother opening it. By looking at the disc tray and my receipt, all I know is it's a Lite On from 2008. So at least I don't need any other special parts aside from a SATA cable.

Go back on YouTube and search for vids on how to open the 360 and save the warranty sticker. All you'd need is a hair dryer. You may have the Lite On 74850 or the 83850 v2. And if so, that would require extra hardware. There weren't a whole lot of the 83850 v1's (which only require a sata cable). They were only used briefly. Hopefully you're lucky and have one, but it's best to be sure right from the get-go.

Also, if you're planning on using the console on LIVE, then you'd want to do a full dump of the Lite On. And that would require extra hardware, no matter which Lite On you have.
