Is the RROD fix fairly easy to do?

I am looking for a quick $100 and figured an easy way would to be to buy a broken RROD box and fix it.
I can get a repair kit for $5 and a broken box for $35. It's an arcade console but I have an extra 20GB HDD laying around I could throw on it and pass it off as a premium. I also have extra cables and a power supply so I am assuming I could fetch at least $180 for it.
That's a fairly quick (about a 2 week turnaround if I can find a buyer) $140.
Think this is a good Idea? I am very comfortable opening the xbox I just haven't done an x-clamp fix before.
(oh and I have a job, it's just that all of THAT money goes towards tuition for the fall. This is for something much more important, concert tickets ;))

If it is RROD and the warranty seal is good, I would send it to Microsoft and make them do the work.

used xboxs dont sellf for that much typically, especially if you tell them it has the xclamp fix. and i wouldnt waste your money on an opening kit, that is useless. i would do as leerage said and send it in, then you can list it as a legit non repaired xbox. that would deff help you sell it. if you want the most bang for your buck, have it fixed, flash it, and sell it on the afterdawn marketplace.

I probably should have mentioned that I planned on flashing it. About how much would one of those go for?
I asked the guy selling it and he said the warranty seal is broken. Time to look for a different one. (Lord knows what he tried doing to it)
If I do end up with one with the seal broken can you sell modded xboxs on ebay?
*edit*
If I sold it on ebay I wouldn't tell them it had the xclamp fix done, I would just say it was refurbished. That's not lying is it?
I didn't buy an opening kit, I already have all the tools I need to open it, the kit has cleaner, thermal paste, and all the washers/screws in it.

Ebay will take your listing down if they feel it leads to copyright infringement. Don't go and say "Modded/Flashed with iXtreme 1.6 firmware". Had a friend do that and his listing got taken down and had to pay a fine.

he had to pay a fine?? i've had a couple pulled down due to stating its was flashed, or upgraded, and all they did was pull the auction, they never said i had to pay a fine or anything.

I can't quite remember all the details but I believe it was like a 20$ fine or have his account suspended for 30 days. But now that I think about it, I don't know if he was telling me the full truth or not.

i see. had mine suspended a few years ago for selling some of my von dutch shirts that i never wore anymore on there. they claimed they were fake even though i had the pictures of the shirts, receipts for them, and the original tags sitting there in the pictures. it was a mess, they wouldnt even respond to my emails i sent them basically telling them off that they are retarded and have no evidence to support that my clothes were fakes.

There's a few people advertising flashed 360's as "Xbox 360 Console *Special*", and just telling people to pm them for more details... they seem to be getting away with it.

Sure you could say that. But the bottom line is, flashing iXtreme firmware is a violation of Microsoft's TOS and copyright infringement because iXtreme is Microsoft's code that has been modified without their permission. That is probably why eBay pulls down auctions.

A buyer could say you lied about the condition and yes ebay/paypal will take the money back if you refuse. There is a big difference between a MS refurb job and a x-clamp *shot in the dark* job. Either way, don't lie as you'll pay in the end.
