Honestly this is a great question. I'm not sure how to answer.
Let me start by saying that I love playing multiplayer games and I have several games that I would love to try out co-op. Unfortunately I do not have a Live account and have no intention of getting one in the near future. It's not because I can't afford it or don't have a decent connection, it's because I've simply been turned off completely when it comes to online multiplayer games.
I'm a grown man with a family. I only get a few hours a week to dedicate to gaming so I don't like wasting them. I used to play online all the time back in the day. I was a Quake 3 fiend, Q3F, Urban Terror, you name it, I played it. But over the years online play has evolved into something that I want no part of.
Maybe it's always been this way and I just didn't care as much when I was younger, I don't know. All I know is that now I can't go into a server without hearing the most god-awful language spewing from kids that can't be more than 12 years old. Having to play with the volume down all the time gets really old after a while but I can deal with that. Next comes the random player that jumps on and uses a wallhack or aimbot. Woo! Bullets flying out of walls or up through floors! This is anti-fun! Once again, I'm forced to leave and find another server with plenty of people playing a game-type that I like (mostly flag-cap, team based stuff). Once I do find another server to play on I get on whichever team has fewer players. We get into a groove and really start to play well! Woo! We're gonna win this round through teamwork and skills! It feels good! This is what multiplayer is all about! Then the other team all drops connection...WTF. Wow, before the round ended half of us were "auto-balanced" to the other team and lost. Great, some more anti-fun.
Basically I realized one day that playing online for me had become an excercise in frustration and grated nerves. What ever happened to "GG" at the end of a match? What happened to playful trash-talk? I couldn't find it anymore so I gave up on it. I play games to have fun and relax, I wasn't having fun anymore so I quit. I miss it and wish it would go back to the way it was.
Anyway...is it worth it? Well 1$ a week sounds like a good deal for unlimited online play, as long as you can stomach the rotten apples.
