Hey, I just got an Xbox with a Samsung drive that appears to have been flashed to iXtreme 1.51. I've been Googling for days, but there's still a few questions I need answers to - the answers I got from Google were either outdated or plain confusing.

1. Is it possible to play Final Fantasy 13 without opening my Xbox?
2. Will I have to open my Xbox to update the drive firmware?
3. What is "activate.iso"? What would I need it for?

I'm truly, genuinely sorry if these questions are too nooby to believe - I'm a moderator under a different name on a ~30k member PSP homebrew forum, and I know a nooby question when I write one! I'm just looking for some straight answers so I know what I can do.

Thanks ever so. :)

1. Yes, by wave patching, you could play FFXIII. (Not advised if you play on live)

2. Yes, you will have to open it in order to flash the drive to updated firmware (currently 1.61 for samsung and hitachi drives). LT is coming soon.

3. Activate.iso is a disc image that allows you to 1-time-boot without stealth. It's purpose is for people who had ixtreme 1.6 that couldn't boot the newer wave games without it. I'm not sure if it works for the current firmware that you have. If you update to 1.61, you could boot any current wave without the activate.iso disc. It's best to wait for the new firmware "LT", if you plan on playing on live.

I tried this, but I got so much conflicting information or empty searches for those 3 questions that I gave up after two frustrating days of searching. I had many other questions that Google answered perfectly, like what these "waves" mean and how to identify drives.

Thanks so much! The Xbox is banned - that's why I have it - so wave patching seems the way to go. I'll give it a try, I can wait a few months for LT to come out for my drive for full compatibility. I assume this means I'll never need to worry about activate.iso, if I'm going to upgrade from 1.51 to LT. This simplifies things, thanks again! :D

EDIT 1: Have I ever mentioned I love you? It works! First try ever and it works like a charm after patching for Wave 3. Had to use this guide to burn the disc properly from Linux:
