I have a xenon Jtag with 13599 dash and xexmenu 1.1. I tried to play Toy Soldiers and it says I need a system update. I read a bunch of tutorials on how to do it but no matter what I try nothing seems to work. I'm assuming it has something to do with not having the default xex with the system update folder but I could be wrong. I'm trying to fix my avatar problem so that Toy Soldiers will boot. I've downloaded around 30 different system updates for dash 13599 but none of them work. I also cant seem to find one with a default.xex file with it. I even used update spy to get the official update but that didn't work ether. I've made sure my system update folder on my usb stick was labeled $systemupdate. I even tried putting the update on a disk. Any ideas on what I'm be doing wrong? Also does anyone know where I can get the official Microsoft update with a defaultxex file. I'm also wondering if it will update with my efuse resistor bridged? I dont think I should unbridge it to see if it will update. Probably I should have used a different dash version as most of the tutorials I have seen are for earlier dash versions. Thank you for reading my post.

I was wondering what the difference between a system update and a dashboard update is? Toy Soldiers says needs a system update to play. I read a bunch about that game and found some info on needing an avatar fix for it to run. Can I just do an updated flash with my usb stick using the official microsoft dash update or will that brick my jtag? I been finding a lot of conflicting info so it makes me a bit nervous to just try it. I'm not sure that I even need to update the dash. I'm already on 13599 but I dont have the avatar stuff. Just to clarify things I own this game legally and my non jtag got fried in a lightning storm and now has the e79 error. Also could the way I transfered my files from my non jtag hard drive to the 250 gig jtag hard drive make my system not want to update? I used a data transfer cable and just transfered everything on the hard drive except my gamer profiles. I did notice it did drag over some of the avatar info from the non jtag hard drive but not all of it. The other 360 was on the same dash if that helps any. All my other downloaded content seems to work fine except this game and fable 1(xbox original). I'm not worried about fable cause I think I know how to get that up and going.
One last thing I did fully back up my jtag hard drive before the transfer was done. any info would be much appreciated. Thank you

Because you already have your nand updated to 13599 it is safe to use the 13599 update on your jtag. What this does is write the update files(avatar items, etc.) only to your hard drive.

you could acually get those files on the hd using any 360

and again it's only safe to use the 13599 system update because you already have the 13599 freeboot image on your nand. TBH since you have the resistor bridged there is no risk but the update wouldn't work.

sounds like you already know but you can get the current update right from M$:

Thank you for the info. Im not sure If I can get availability to a xbox360 that can go on line right now. I downloaded the update link. I guess I'm going to unbridge my resistor for the update. I'm thinking I mite put a toggle switch in to eliminate the need to take it apart in the future If I ever have to do an update like this again.

no dont unbridge the resistor you dont update the system(nand) on a jtagged box with a M$ update anyway. you already have the 13599 dashboard(freeboot) so you just need the system files on your hdd. you should be able to just put that update from the link on a usb thumb drive the bridged resistor shouldn't make a difference since you already have the 13599 dash(freeboot).

in case you ever run an update that wasn't already flashed to the nand in freeboot form it's best to have the failsafe in place otherwise you could patch your jtag hack.

what i meant when i said the update wouldn't work was that it wouldnt work if you didn't already have 13599 dash in your system, my bad

'm not sure why but my when I boot my jtag with the usb stick in it with the update folder on it nothing happens. I can see the usb stick files when I run xex menu 1.1 Is there a way to manually run this update by copying and pasting it where it goes. Im wondering if I got some kind of error on my nand. Ive downloaded many system updates from several locations and have the same results every time. I even tried booting the game with the usb stick installed. I had a new unused hard drive also and I formatted it with my jtag then put xexmenu1.1 on it plus the game I had the issue with then tried to update it then. I followed a bunch of tutorials but they mention an default.xex file being in the root of the usb stick. I dont know if I need defaultxex or not. The way I understood the turorial I just make sure the folder with the update is named $systemupdate then put it into my jtag and turn it on and id b prompted for the update. Does it matter which usb port I use? I tried the front two but my stick is to wide to go into the rear usb.

try renaming the folder to $$ystemupdate ... it's a dashlaunch thing

alternatively you can set

noupdater = false

in the launch.ini

Thank you very much I renamed the folder and it worked great. I must have not noticed in the tutorials that the s was a $ sign. Funny how simple mistakes can make a big difference.
