I know that with a regular xbox in order to play an mkv file you have to download divx codec pack and stream the mkv file through windows media center. If I jtag my xbox is there another, perhaps easier way to play mkv file using my external hdd?

I tried to copy a mkv to my fat32 external hdd. Since jtag games have to be played from fat32 my whole external is fat32. But it said the file was too large to be copied over. Are MKV's payed on different file format?

if the file is over 4 gigs in size, it will not go onto a fat32 hdd as that is the limitation of fat32.

ffplay can read off of either fat32 or nfts. just make sure ffplay path is set in fsd so you can select it out of the homebrew section. then it will ask you where the movies are at once you start ffplay up. just navigate to w/e you want to watch and select it.

Personally it's better to make your own encoded files then depending if it's movie or music vid you can control the quality of both the vid & audio streams
mediainfo can give you handy info on the file including amount of audio streams as well as bitrate of said audio, below the options are assuming the encode was done with quality in mind
1-convert mkv back to std dvd & remove front & end frames thereby shortening the overall length (use dvd shrink to do the front & end frames as well as an extra audio & subs)),right clik resulting file see if it's under 4gb,that's size on disk not size of file
2-if it has more than one audio stream remove one of them keeping the one with the highest bitrate-mediainfo will have shown which one that was,tho shrink will show the larger of the two so keep the bigger one
3-remove subtitles
4-you could scrap the above & re encode with handbrake & shrink the video down instead, however if it was already compressed you may have issues with quality, never done it so can't say how it'd turn out,if the original compression was 80% you should be fine to recompress
5-get the original video compress it yourself, only reason you'd need mkv is if you have included dvd menu & more than two audio streams & more than two subtitle streams
any audio below 224kb is pretty poor quality basically mp3.unless it's digital of some sort,i have a music vid that has 78kb audio & sounds brilliant
edit: handbrake can do the re-encode

or just use a usb pen drive that is in ntfs and be done with everything. no need to encode, re-encode, remove, add anything. and yes ffplay can play off of hdd. thats what it was designed to do.
