Is there a way to upgrade a STOCK 74850C drive with the new 8-firmware, and then flash it using the STOCK 83850C tutorial within this thread?
No, if you have the 74850C Lite-ON, you must use the probe to obtain the DVDkey. From there, you will flash iXtreme 1.6 for 74850C drives.

Maybe hook it up to a different SATA port. Make sure you are following the steps for half tray status and ejecting fully correctly.

1. Connect your Lite-ON drive and power it on with the CK3 DVD connectivity kit.
2. Load up Jungle Flasher and go to the DVDkey32 tab. Make sure your Lite-ON is detected (PLDS DG-16D2S FW: 8385).
3. Click LO83info.
4. You will get a popup box saying to put the drive into half tray status. Eject the drive and then shut it off on the CK3. Push the tray halfway in and then power back on the drive with the CK3. Then click OK.
5. The next box will prompt you to put the drive in a fully eject status. So hit the eject button on the CK3 and it will close the drive. Hit the eject button 1 more time and it will fully eject the drive. Then click OK.
6. It should dump the encrypted DVDkey. It will want you to repeat that process 1 more time so just follow the steps again.
7. After you have done the half tray and fully open tray, JF should prompt you to save the Inquiry, Identify, and Dummy bin.

Thanks Leerage for the great tutorial. I followed it step by step and even this newb was able to get it flashed.
Only thing that was a little confusing was the tray half open. The jungle flasher writeup mentioned to open the tray, close the tray, power off while closing it and move it to the half open position.
That threw me off a little but i followed your method of just opening it, pulling the plug and then moving it to the half open.
The following step of full open, i just hit the eject button until it fully closed and opened.
It would have been a little tricky to unplug it while closing without the connectivity kit.
Anyways, thanks again!

Go ahead and click LO83 info. When using the 360 to power the drive, go ahead and eject the tray. Pull the power cable from the DVD drive and push the tray half way in. Plug the DVD power cable back in and click OK. It will prompt you to eject the tray fully. So press the eject button to close, then press the eject button again to get the tray fully ejected.

Well my last falcon 360 only lasted me about a year... so i went and plopped down the cash on a new arcade unit. Dunno which version i have, i hope its 83850c... the only part that worries me about this process is the possibility of getting a bad key. You state to flash another drive to test but i dont have one to try on... how common is it to bork a lite-on flash? Ive successfully flashed 2-3 hitachis and a benq so far over the past few years. errr. Scared. haha

I've been reading that to get it to the full open position you press the eject button and it'll close then once again to open it. Mine doesn't do that. I hit the eject but and from the half open position it just opens. I've tried over 30 times now. I manual pulled it to the full position like I use to do with the old ones I did. Any ideas guys? This is starting to frustrate me. LOL
