I was always curious and somewhat leery about all those M$ dashboard updates and I'm just curious to learn about such possibility. (Please note that it's just my guess and such didn't happen to me.)

If M$ can somehow read the CRC on the DVD drive's firmware and ban us from going on Live, can they also release some updated dashboard and do the same with the console? Here's a hypothetical "worst case scenario" -- you update the dashboard on your 360 and after that it starts up with some E-blah-blah error telling you, "DVD drive firmware is corrupted. Contact technical support." Just curious, what stops M$ from doing that?

They don't detect the firmware period. theres no firmware CRC. They detect bad data sent back while the drive is reading the disc. They have made it even harder for firmware to be read hence the new lite-on drives. So they are not sending any firmware information back.
Plus if they could somehow magically detect it they couldn't/wouldn't render your xbox useless. All of the exx errors are pre-programmed onto the xbox's error detection. And to go out on to an even further limb and say they could they wouldn't due to legality issues. Once you buy the box its yours. If they could somehow remotely render it useless they would be facing criminal charges for destroying someone else' property.

They're detecting modded consoles somehow. I doubt that they can detect the firmware though, detecting how many times the dvd drive has been flashed is a possibility.
