ok so my xbox's disc drive is failing and doesnt work right, im trying to replace it with the one from another broken xbox, both are legal factory installed drives how can i swap these out and make them work without any risk of being banned, neither of them are hacked drives or anything and frankly i want nothing to do with any modding or hacking i just want to get the drives working is there any way i can do this?

Depends. If you can find the same model+firwmare, you just swap the PCM board. In the fashion, you will get a new laser assembly without the motherboard recognizing the drive is in fact different. This only works with Hitachi and Samsung, as the other drives have their board soldered in.

Otherwise you have to extract the key and flash.

Even if you flash, as long as it is original firmware, you will most likely be safe. During this wave I haven't heard of anyone banned who simply replaced drives that were the same model. I have heard of people who spoofed the drives as something else and still got banned even using original firmware, but that is a different mode of detection.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

This is correct. I have swapped for a few customers with no ban.
