Im a bit confused as to what would be the best route for this drive,
1: I could buy the laser and replace it
2: I could buy a Lite On drive for it and switch the boards
3: i could buy a different drive for it and just spoof it
Those are my choices but im not sure what would benefit me most??
If i chose the first option and replaced the laser it would be almost as expensive as replacing the drive and i haven't read alot of success stories when attempting this!
If i chose the second option to buy the Lite On drive and switch boards it would probably be the easiest method.
But if i chose to replace the drive with another type and spoof it, then i would like to know whats the best drive i should go for as a replacement? Are the benQ drives better than lite on drives?
Can someone maybe list the drives from Good to bad to give me an idea where they stand.
Also i Have a spare Samsung H943 drive i could use for it, how good are these drives considered to be??
I'd replace the laser. I think you can get them for around $10 on ebay. Good lasers and easy to replace. I've done this a couple of times for Lite-ON/BenQ and they all work great.

i never see lite on lasers on ebay, but i read that the benq lasers are the same ones, is that true, because i do see benq lasers on ebay

Thats the cheapest laser for the lite on drive i could find £12.59
But i saw a benQ Drive for sale, for as little as £16.99
It does have to come from china but hell for the price difference i reckon it might be worth it as i could always sell my lite on as faulty on ebay and get a little bit of change back in my pocket.

Yes, Lite-ON and BenQ have the same laser.
I Read the same thing but after looking closely at the picture on ebay of the benQ laser and comparing it to my lite on laser i discovered that the ribbon cable input is on the opposite side.
UMDJ, If you do go down that route be sure to check with somone who has actually done it, Have a look at your lite on laser and compare it your self and you will soon see that the ribbon cable on the lite on PCB would not reach the input of the benq laser if it really is on the opposite side as shown in the ebay picture..
yea i'm gonna have to take a look at that for sure
edit: when i look at the benq laser, it looks like the installation would be fine
the pic of the benq laser you saw must have been a mirrored image. i say this because i just looked on ebay and searched benq laser and it game me results, but one or of them were in reverse(like you describe) compared to the majority and from my exp with benq, i dont recall the laser ribbon input being like that, all drives usually have them facing the rear of the drive
Im still drawn to the New Dive option as i could probably sell the Lite On drive on ebay as faulty, recover some of the price difference and avoid the hassle of fitting the laser.
All this being said i still dont know how good the benq Dives actually are?? Sad i know but up until now ive only had hitachi and samsung drives to play with :)
well they look the same, but it doesnt mean they will work the same. i hope it does though. i may do a new drive option aswell. get a benq. they are easy to flash thats for sure, and the quality seems good too
