If all you can do is played burned games, I'm betting your just have a modded drive. You'll need a JTAG to play MAME.
Edit: I might have seen something for "Retail Dash" so you may be able to play MAME on a non-JTAG console. Let me see...

What does the other allow you to do? Sorry for the newb questions.. I've dealt with psp/ps2/wii mods for a while but am new to xbox

Sorry about that. MAME360 is just strictly for JTAG XBOX 360s. A JTAG will allow you to run unsigned code therefor allowing Homebrew apps like MAME360.

so LT only lets me play backup games, while JTAG allows for backup games/homebrew (mame, emulators)

Makes sense. I assume LT is probably cheaper as well.
Now I'm wondering if there are any other obvious questions or things I'm missing. Have been playing with abgx360.

They're about the same price between modding and jtag, but jtag is harder to do and does not work on consoles that have been updated past the 7371 dashboard. The reward for the jtag is obviously higher for the added functionality, but then again I believe you lose your ability to play on live (at least without getting banned). I dont have a jtag system personally though so I can't say for sure if they do or don't work on live still.

Well I dont know about "safe" meaning you're not 100% immune from a ban even with LT as some other members on here will tell you: playing games early and 10th prestige lobbies can still get you banned, even if you go straight from virgin to LT. You can increase your odds of avoiding bans by just doing things that most normal users have to do: don't use hacks and wait until the game comes out before playing. Then make sure it's verified retail in the abgx database and update to SSv2

Yes when the games show up as SSv1 and they're wave 3 or above you have to download the SSv2 for the matching game version from the abgx database. Be careful here to check the CRCs to make sure they match, then import the SSv2 .bin into the ISO from abgx

and the ssv2 is only relevant if I want to play online. If it is a game I won't/can't play online, ssv1 is fine.. right?
ok. i'll try that. you know of a tut that does a walkthrough.\

so if I run it through abx360 and it shows up as ss version: 2 (trusted), it is good to go.

If you ever plan to play online on any of your games, I'd make sure all your games are SSv2 for maximum safety. It's easy to do, first scan the game with abgx. You'll get the XEX CRC and media ID. Go to http://www.abgx360.net/verified.php and find the gaming with corresponding XEX/media. To the right of the wave column are numbers that're links. Download the SS for the matching SS CRC. Then go into abgx's manually patch, select patch SS and find the SS .bin file you just downloaded. Then rescan and make sure it says SSv2 now and you're good to go
