I recently started having this problem after fixing my 360 from the e 74 error.
After observing it, and giving it few test I've come to a conclusion.
The problem lies within the top ring thing that is attached to the case of the dvd rom, if you open it up you'll see it.
For w.e reason it is unable to attach it self to the DVD rom, and thus you get the constant light blinking, and dvd rom doesn't function.
I tried adding a bit of pressure to the top of the dvd rom, right on top where the ring is and it works perfectly.
Just place some pennies warped up with electric tape to give just enough pressure for it to attach it self to the dvd rom, and it should work.
I noticed there is a thread about this already, but I couldn't reply to it, so I figured I'll make a new thread for those looking for a solution.
Hope it helps.

Make sure you backup your drive firmware here as it sounds like your drive may be dying

okay, now i started getting it again, so i opened up the dvd drive, and placed the magnet right on top of the cd manually.
The 360 boots up fine and reads the drive, but when it starts reading the disk the laser goes back and forth couple of times, and it reboots it self, and the drive gets disconnects again.
Can someone help me out? Does it mean the driver no longer works, or is there a way to fix it without replacing it?

may need a pot calibration... or possible a laser realignment? I remember seeing a video about some guys laser being outside the readable area (video shows laser jumping around the center area - not in the readable area) and he did something with foam on the rails, or something along those lines... and it steadied the laser, and brought it back in more, so it would read the disc...

or you can make a copy of your firmware, and get a new drive.. might be dying like miketrev said.

You're all wrong. E74 is NOT a DVD drive issue. E74 is an overheat issue, same as the 3 red lights. Now the constant flashing is the dvd drive. Just dump the firmware, and spoof to a new one. done.

I never said I had the e74 error, I just said I had it before, but fixed it.
The real problem now is that the drive just sometimes boots up, and sometimes it doesn't.
Now it's not even reading anymore, and the tray wont open either.
Are you sure it's because of the bad firmware? because it worked perfectly few days back.
I'll try re-flashing it.

well, flashed it, and still nothing.
When I press the tray button the 360 reboots it self and goes into normal reading mode, then when I press it again it reboots and goes into vendor mode.
Is this fixable, or this dvd drive has seen its last days? =[

Haha, didn't read the thread correctly there modking? He said this started after fixing the e74. Also, E74 can be from bad solder joints.

@OP as myself and modking said, dump the firmware and flash to a new drive to solve your problem

I'm getting frustrated now, ms really messed up 360, lol.
Now when I turned it on this morning the power lights don't work anymore, but the system boots up fine. And my controllers were no longer connected to the system, so I tried connecting them, but nothing works...dam u bill gates.
