Ok I've done some research on this and I think the steps to mod this drive are significantly easier than they used to be. From my reading this is what I'll need
Latest version of Jungle Flasher
iXtreme 1.6 for Hitachi
From what I have read the motherboard chipset does not matter anymore with the Hitachi drives. I will use the power from the 360 to power the drive. It sounds like as long as I can get it into Mode B then I should be all set.

->Keep in mind that the latest firmware for Hitachi is 1.51 (same as 1.6 for other drives... except for some new features such as 0800 comp)
-> if the drive has been pre-flashed already, make sure to flash back to stock, then to 1.51

Ah ok. Thanks for the heads up on 1.51. Also its a stock drive so I should be ok. I just hope it all works in the end. We'll find out tomorrow.

Even after you get it flashed, you will probably have to do a POT Calibration to the laser. Hitachis are notorious for this. You will put a backup game and then the Hitachi will act like it wants to read it, sit there for a bit making noise, and then say "Open Tray".
Personally, I would dump the key, and flash it to a BenQ.

Hmm bummer. Can you point me to any writeups for this (I would dump the key, and flash it to a BenQ.) :)

You will need to follow the Jungle Flasher tutorial in order to dump the key. If you plan on getting a BenQ, the spoofing steps are easy.
Load original Hitachi 47 firmware into Source.
Load IX 1.6 for BenQ into Target.
Click spoof source to target.
Get BenQ into vendor mode and write the firmware.

So you are saying to buy a benq drive basically. I can't change my hitachi to act like a benq can i?

You would have to purchase a BenQ drive.
Personally, I would replace the Hitachi with a BenQ if it were my console. Don't let me keep you from flashing the Hitachi drive though. All I was saying is that you might have to do a POT calibration after you flash the Hitachi.
The reason I recommend BenQs is because they are able to support Bad Flash recovery. They are quiet drives and read games well. They are less picky about the media (you should be using Verbatims anyways). Overall they are a much better drive.

Gotcha. Yah I'm going to give it a shot just because I'm curious if I can even get it to work now. If it doesn't I'll probably shoot you a PM for one of your benq drives if you have any left.

Well no luck. I couldn't get Jungle Flasher to find the drive. I did find it odd that when I had my drive open and I was powering on the computer itself, that the 360 tray would close and the xbox would power off during windows startup.
However I did try an earlier version of jungle flasher. Made sure the firmware from iXtreme was placed in the jungle flasher folder. I tried to leave the 360 tray half open and then seeing if it would pick it up and it did not. Have i missed anything?

Well I may give that a try. I have a friend with a SATA - USB card that he is going to let me borrow and I also have a sata card itself that I want to try.
