I no longer have the sticker with the version number on it so I am unsure if I have the MS25 or MS28 Toshiba Samsung drive. If I buy an MS28 and use the PCB from my current DVD drive assuming it's an MS25, will it work? Is there any way at all of identifying the difference between them? The Xbox was manufactured in the early months of 2006, if this helps.
Thank you!

Firstly, why are you doing this? Do you have a faulty drive?
Assuming your original drive works, you should be able to read the drive with jungle flasher and is will tell you what drive it is

I'm getting unreadable disc errors and freezes like mad even on my brand new games. Connecting the drive to my PC is not an option seeing as it doesn't support SATA.

Sorry, i dont know of any other way to tell. I can take a pic of my ms25 if you want but ive never seem a ms28
Would suggest getting the VIA 6241 sata card to get your drive key anyway as the one you are getting the issues with may even have some sort of PCB fault (though it does sound like the laser)

even if you get another drive,,you still have to read the keys of your old drive and flash and spoof the firmware to your new drive to get it to work on your console,,you cant just unplug tthe old drive and plug in the new one,,wont work,,

I think thats why he wants to swap the board as they key is essentially built in to the PCB.
BTW, off topic, is your login, "coorva" the polish swear word, or does it mean summit else?

I may try that coorva if swapping the boards do not work, but I'd much rather do so.
Thanks for all the replies.

Found this on LLama's site which may help, " Since there is no real difference hardware wise between the two; you can downgrade a MS28 to a MS25. Once its a MS25 you no longer need special steps or modifications to flash again"
