gave me his 360. Disk drive makes a grinding noise and will not read disks. Just says "reading" and then "open drive". I opened the drive up and i think the circuit board is warped and the laser is hitting it when it passes. I tried to bend it but no luck. What do i need to do? Do i need to make sure i buy the exact same model of drive? And will a new drive just be plug and play?

you will have to buy a new drive, preferably a benq drive. then dump the FW off of your current drive, and flash it to the new drive.
Come talk with us on efnet at #elitemods !!! or just click ME
ALSO, DO NOT SEND ME MESSAGES ON LIVE REGARDING MODDING CONSOLES, OR HOW I PLAYED A CERTAIN GAME EARLY. I WILL NOT RESPOND. I WILL INSTEAD DELETE YOUR MESSAGE, AND BLOCK ALL COMMUNICATION FROM YOU. JUST SEND ME A PM ON HERE.

I have heard a grinding noise produced by the laser itself before, even when it was not hitting anything at all. I replaced the (burned out) laser itself and the noise stopped and it worked perfectly, with no other modifications.
You could unscrew the two little screws holding in the PCB and put some sort of spacer between the board and the tray. A small piece of cardboard, a tiny washer, etc.
If you are looking at the drive with the tray opened, realize that the laser gets tilted and will not fully open. Close the tray and it will pass (just barely) above the PCB.
A new drive is ~$30 and requires a reflash. A new laser is $11 and does not require a reflash.
$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check

I may try that. I would think cardboard would be a fire hazzard? Its definately hitting the lazer. It doesnt do it with the tray open, just does it when its closed. I tried moving it both ways...

I saw a website (in canada) that mods drives and thought about going that route because the 360 was free and i already have one. They said i would need to send them the drive to get the key off of. You think that is safe? (maybe a microsoft shill company getting your home address?)...

I have this drive: dg-16d2s lite-on
Where can you find a laser replacement for $11?

They say something about a static solder point. What exactly does that mean?

theres a piece of solder on the laser that needs to be removed before you put it in the disc or it wont do anything.

Do you have to have a solder gun or can you just break it off? By the way, thanks for the help. :-)
