I'm not liking the sound of this. I have a kreon and verbatims. If this messes with my ability to make backups it could be the end of my gaming days. I haven't played a game since Red Dead so it's not the end of the world.

Just providing the facts that were missing by the OP.

From majornelson.com:

"I am happy to announce that we're doing an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program for our next release, and the opportunity to sign up is now available. We are conducting an open call for US based participants* for a public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format. This is an important update as we continually strive to improve our products and we could not do so without the help of our great Xbox community. As part of the preview program, you will receive a copy of Halo: Reach along with other possible rewards.

Much like we did last year, you'll need to visit the Microsoft Connect site from this link and sign in with your Windows LIVE ID that is connected to your Xbox LIVE Gamertag. Once you complete the survey that is presented to you, the Connect site will provide program related updates and you will receive a mail once the selection process is completed.

A couple of points before you head off to register:
* We're looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good.
* This opportunity is open to Xbox LIVE Members in US region only(*).
* To avoid any problems, read the survey carefully and double check all the information you provide.
* While both Xbox LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up, priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.

(*)Due to disc distribution limitations, this beta it will be limited to residents of the United States only."

He could work for Microsoft, and make iXtreme on the side. I doubt it though, because it would be available much sooner than it usually is.

My point-is it going to be some new type of disc, in a case where DL discs are not going to work. It's not just some type of firmware

Now you ask what it is exactly? Microsoft will introduce the so-called XGD3 disc formats from around late April / early May. Currently, the XGD2 (Xbox Game Disc 2) formats in use. The disc image will always have a fixed size of about 6.8GB net and as such are limited to this maximum limit. The format offers something XGD3 about 1GB more memory (also net) and reached thus roughly 7.8GB. This 1GB available to developers of course. However, this new hash checks and anti-piracy measures are used. This XGD3 disc image (if one can read in the conventional way), cannot be burned to a commercially available double-layer discs, because they are outside the size capacity. During pressing of the discs in the press shop are virtually forced validation data to the extreme edges of the disc, which on the one hand, the verification, on the other hand, as an anti-copying system, since these sectors are not to describe blanks, not to mention the fact that Brenner these do Außnahmesituationen can only describe.

Microsoft reached so many years, an almost sure way to stem the Kopierbarkein. This is especially which are now contained to a plague which has become piracy. Only JTAG owners need not imply any idea of what to do next. Text of flying short shrug their shoulders and jump to the next topic.

For everyone else this means, however, that in future, first no more games can be copied. (Personally, I welcome this step, the longest was necessary in some form!).

The introduction is so well established, however, also certain that we can expect from almost all programs, the new version that can deal from now on with the XGD3. On the hardware side the way, no interference is expected. XGD3 discs will work with all previously released (and future) models of the Xbox 360.

google translate of: http://www.boerse.bz/multimedia/konsolen/xbox-360/726367-xbox360-discformat-xgd3-kommt-bald-kopieren-vorerst-unmoeglich.html

Please relise this is just what i found online, and all speculation at this point!

I wonder if these will be the new discs we will need to get.

DVD-18 holds 15.9GB and is supported by the DVD+R format. It is also known as Double-Sided Double Layer (or Double-Sided Dual Layer).

rumor
Xbox 360?s "New Disc Format" Is A 1GB Storage Boost

Luke Plunkett ? So, Microsoft is testing a "new disc format". The more fanciful of you are thinking that means "Blu-Ray". The more sensible and well-connected are thinking it's something a little more realistic.

Tech gurus Digital Foundry claim that, according to "a highly placed development source", this new disc format is simply the same old Xbox 360 disc, albeit one with extra storage capacity.

Currently, a 7.95GB Xbox 360 disc can only have 6.8GB of game data on it, because there's an inaccessible partition on the disc itself that has stuff like video code and anti-piracy measures behind it.

Digital Foundry's source reckons that the "new disc format" is simply the existing disc with this partition having "either been drastically reduced or omitted completely".

This would give 360 games a 15% boost in storage, which in some cases may alleviate the increasing (and annoying) need for Xbox games to ship on multiple discs.

We've contacted Microsoft for comment, and will update if we hear back.

Redline has stated that, in a nutshell, MS will use a format that will hold more data on an original game disc then what can be burnt to a dual layer. He also states that the new ap checks involved would verify that the data is the correct size (meaning it wasn't shrunk to fit on a dual layer).

Quote:
I can confirm though prior anonymous sources that the XGD3 information that has been posted is true. Microsoft will employ a new physical disc format and include new anti piracy checks available to the GAME to authenticate. My assumption on how both of these new implentations will work is that the disc will be produced with a higher capacity designed to not fit on dvd+r dl. An analogy would be them turning on "overburn" options to obtain a little more capacity. The second item, the new ap checks, will be using on-the-fly hash checks to verify the integrity of the disc data. The console currently does this type of hash check on the xb360 disc. It gets a hash value from the security sector to verify sector 0x30 of the game partition. That sector then has a table of hashes for the rest of the disc. The authentication currently only checks 5 random entries. I believe the new API will be an extension of this process. This will help ensure that the game iso is not reduced in size to fit on a dvd+r dl. By the way, this is also why "sector mapper" is not enabled for xb360 discs in XBC.

it almost sounds like it would be easier to just somehow shrink the games down to fit on dl disc...could b a option.
