Hello Afterdawners!
I have a few questions I'd like to ask some of you 360 whizz's if you would be so kind as to read my wall of text!
I've had successes with other consoles playing backups in the past so i'm not that useless!
Anyway, I figured that I have an Hitachi drive inside my 360 after downloading a tutorial created in .pdf format found lurking around here.
Too cut to the chase, I was going to attempt to flash my 360 on the Friday just gone, then I read about needing SATA cables etc and my brain has just frazzled.
So I've found a 3rd party who would kindly flash my console for me, now here's where I need some help...
1.What process would the 3rd party most likely use? Are there various methods of flashing I should enquire about?
2.When updating the flashing firmware (?) would I have to re flash the console anyway? (Meaning should I just give it a go on my own?)
3. Would I be able to simply copy all my original games onto standard DVD discs? Or would I need specific ones e.g dual layer?
4. This XGD3 format sounds like a pain but am I right in hearing that the situation has changed?
5. Is it easy to create a paperweight out of the 360?
Any help would be really appreciated.
I'll continue tutorial searching before I make my mind up, even though I've already found a noob friendly one!!

Whatever method a modder uses, you want to make sure you're on the latest dashboard version and have the latest version of LT+ for your drive. Any decent modder should make sure that happens, but some don't know what they're doing.
I think it's better to learn to do it yourself. It's not hard really (depending on the drive) and once you know how to do it you can always stay up to date when new custom firmwares come out, plus if you need to flash back to stock to update the dashboard, that's no problem either.
360 games need to be burned to DVD+R DL discs. The recommended discs are Verbatim. Some people use other brands with no problems, but most of the time when someone's having an issue burning, or with their 360 not reading the disc, it's because they're using crap discs.
XGD3 has been defeated, but the ripping tools for ripping the games and LT+ 2.0 (the firmware required to play XGD3 backups) have not yet been released. I doubt it'll be much longer now, but the people who create these things hardly ever give an ETA or release date, so who knows?

The main thing is to make sure you've got a backup of your drive's original firmware, particularly the drive key. If you don't dump the key properly, then you erase the drive and you have no backup, that's it - your 360 is a DVD/CD player.

I think I'm going to try and buy a used xbox on the cheap and attempt to flash it myself before I destroy my own.
With regards to the official dashboard updating, I have kept mine off LIVE for a fortnight or so now incase of an update... (I thought the newer the update the harder it would be to flash?)
Checked out the Verbatim's they seem to be the best out there, I also found a cheaper brand called Infiniti which I may aswell try.
All in all though thankyou very much for the help, I may have to get back to you on here with more clueless queries in the near future!
Edit...
I already have another question.
If I am to rip my 360 collection, will I need a DVD DL RW? I've had a gander on the tinternet and there seems to be no decent external ones.
Anybody have an smooth running external DL RW?

What do you mean exactly? I have my xbox modded by a third party and have no info (dummy.bin data).

He means if you attempt to flash, or in your case, re-flash your drive, make sure you dump the drive contents correctly or you will not get your key and the xbox is pretty much useless without that key being able to tell a dvd drive that it belongs to that specific xbox. You can't just take any drive and put it in there or even put your old one back in there without that key.
In your case, if you or another person re-mod your drive, all you need to do is re-dump the files currently in there as they already have your key in them if the xbox is working. The original files are not really needed but they are good to have. As long as you have your key, even if written on a piece of paper, you will be ok.
