i have searched for this for hours with no confirmation.
i have a flashed Hitachi drive (dont know what with) and do not ever use xbox live, so always offline. i put in my backup of dirt 3 today and said i need an update. question is can i update and still play backups offline with the Hitachi drive?

General rule of thumb:
Game updates are fine, system updates need to be checked by the scene.

take it any game that asks is just a game update?
do Microsoft ever put the system update on new game discs?

No! If you play offline and a disc tells you that you have to apply an update then it is a system update. I think they are getting confused with title updates which are game updates/patches only available from live or you have to transfer them yourself to hd. Have no idea why they would tell you otherwise, just like soon the update everyone is dreading now through live will be released on upcoming games.

Mr.Mike is indeed correct. If a game on an offline xbox asks you to update, it is a system update and you should ask about it. As of right now, updates included on past and current games are okay. Future games, not so much.
