hi guys, been out of the scene for a bit.anyway i have this 83850c drive that i have,so i was wondering if it is ok to use my rs232 level converter to grab the key since i have no ck3 here.if there is one that can be home built,i would be happy to set it up.i was looking at leerage tutorial and did not see any mentioning of a home made device, not sure if they just opted to use the ck for less trouble or not. thanks.

RS232 won't work. You'll need to cut traces and either solder a switch and a resistor in, or use the Vampire or Probe 2.
You can use this tutorial
Let me know if you need any other info or help.
Edit-- I should at least note that if it is not an August 2009 drive, there is a way to get the DVDkey over SATA with no soldering. But be advised this doesn't dump the entire firmware. Full firmware dumps are recommended if you are going to play online.

I was asking this elsewhere. I have a lite-on but have never flashed one before. It is the very first lite-on released and I have a spare Samsung so I just want the DVD key. Is there a simple way to do this without cutting or soldering?

If it is the 74850C you can probe the R707 hole to get the DVDkey. If you never plan on going online with the console then using the Samsung will be fine and you can use the R707 method. You can purchase the Probe 2 that has R707 capabilities. If you want to go the homemade route, Bhetrick made a nice tutorial in the ultimate sticky.

Since it is the 83850C manufactured in August 2009, you'll need to cut traces and either solder a switch and resistor to the drive to dump the firmware or use the Probe 2/Vampire.

Troika, do as leerage's two option say:
1) Solder a switch and resistor like these pics show. Be sure to scroll down for the other pic.
or
2) Order a CK3 & Probe II, and follow this tutorial.

The 707 Method also does not dump the LASER calibration which is bad. This can result in the laser needed to be replaced often. I would only recommend a full dump on ALL lite-ons.
