Hi, My friend's xbox is refusing to recognise any discs that are put into the tray. The xbox has never been opened or flashed, and the games that are put in are original copies.

Would I be able to fix this by replacing the DVD drive by spoofing a BenQ drive to put in it's place? Or will the dvd drive be totally fried (unable to retrieve key?). Not heard much about this so just wondering whether it can be easily fixed.

Most open tray errors are caused by a bad laser lens and some times by the motor that makes the dvd spin you can buy a lens for under $10 on ebay

I already have a spare drive here, how difficult is it to replace the lens ? Any tuts available ?

you can try this link to see if that helps :) it shows a sammy and hitachi but i expect that a benq is just as straight forward.

Lasers are cake to install and will save you $ if you don't already have a 6421 via card. $10 on ebay. Here is a step by step laser install tut:

Thanks, appreciate the links - helped a lot. I also had a quick look on youtube and it seems like a pretty easy procedure for both the laser and the motor.
