So I've searched this topic and found 2+ year old answers, if you want to call them that. The topics got veered off into the direction of which media should be used....then someone mentioned rubber bands? turning the machine vert/horiz to fix it? come on....help me out plz, heres my problem.

I have iXtreme 1.6 and use only Verbatim discs...i burn using XBC 2.9 and burn at 2x. I've been using the activate.iso on some of the newer games and all has been working great...until Need For Speed Shift....i get 'open tray' on my 360, i can eject/load a dozen times....lay it flat, stand it up...still not working.

Has my laser gone bad? Will updating to iXtreme 1.61 fix it? Should I be laying my machine flat instead of vertically? Should I just smash my 360 through the floor with a sledge? help plzzzz

layerbreak is set to 1913760 and i've been playign new games as well...codmw2 works fine, l4d2 and many more work just as well.

Your current firmware will play need for speed.
Verbs are cool so your ok there.
Perhaps you should burn it in IMGburn at 2.4x.
Maybe the copy of NFS is not a good one.

Could be a bad burn or a bad rip never know till you troubleshoot or could be early signs of a bad laser. How long have you had the 360 or better yet how old is the console? What drive is in it?

Should i just switch to IMGburn anyways? Is it better than XBC?

This 360 is a few years old, has a samsung ms25 drive in it. I just tested Scene it! Bright Lights, Big Screen! and it works fine...i'm really hoping its just a bad copy of nfs shift..you think I should redownload and try again or just unzip and try that again?

Sounds like a bad burn to me as well.

If it only does it on the one game and plays all others fine then I would also say it's a bad burn.

For the record though, I had a drive doing this with all burned discs I tried in it. Games that worked fine on other boxes wouldn't read in this drive. I cleaned the laser with alcohol and it worked fine after that.

You need to be using ABGX. It will set the layerbreak for you. The only program you should ever use to burn is imgburn and select the .dvd file that ABGX created.
