PC freezes when VIA drivers removed

I've been trying unsuccessfully to flash my Benq drive with JungleFlasher on 32-bit XP, and I'm fairly certain it's because I've been leaving my VIA 6421 SATA card drivers installed (purposely, and I'll get to why in a bit). Everything runs fine (although a bit slow and choppy) until the last step, where I get a "Write Verify Failed" error.

At first I followed the instructions perfectly, but when the viamraid.sys driver was deleted and the VIA card displaying a yellow exclamation point in device manager, my computer would instantly lock up the second I powered on my 360. Do I need to keep trying with different computers, or can any of you think of a solution to help me out with? I'm using this card: http://tekgems.com/Products/la-pci22-vt6421a.htm

Right now I have an inoperable 360 (although my original drive FW is backed up in about 4 or 5 different places), so I'd really like to resolve this issue soon.
