I know playing online early is bad, and I'm pretty sure saving and unlocking achievements early would be bad and raise a flad with MS. But is it OK to play early offline with no HD or memory card in place? Or does the 360 somehow log what you are doing?

Well let me ask this: If I switch my HDD between a hacked console playing backups (including early releases), and a stock console that is on Live, will the hacked console somehow tag my HDD or Gamertag as having played on a hacked console? Neither console has been flagged/banned.

the information is stored on your NAND, so you'll be banned in the next wave or maybe earlier.I can't believe people still ask this question.

It would be interesting to see the results if someone JTAG'd and dumped a full NAND before and after playing a game with bad CRCs etc. This would put an end or validate the "Everything is saved to the NAND" theory.

I'm not really up on the tech side of all of it, but trying to learn. I have a gamertag with a legit score I'd hate to lose. I'm not going to take my hacked console online but I'd like to swap the HD back and forth to earn achievements, not even with early games. If a backup is verified and stealthed is there still a chance my Gamertag could still be flagged somehow by the hacked Xbox, even if it never goes online?

You risk being banned for early play by doing that, because when you attach the hard drive to your online console and sign into Live, details of achievements you've earned will be uploaded. The only time anyone has had their gamertag permanently banned for early play was with Forza 3 though AFAIK.
I have an offline (modded) and online (unmodded) console. I swap a memory unit between the two as both have 120 GB hard drives. If I play a game early offline, I don't sign into Live at all on the other console until the game I was playing early has been released. Achievements earned offline are not date stamped, so they have no way of knowing when you earned them, but obviously if you connect to Live before the game is out, they'll know you've played it early - whether they do anything about it though is another matter. Personally, I would rather not risk losing my gamertag, Live sub, MS Points, friends list etc.

A big thanks to all who responded! Funksoulb: your layout is just like what I want to do. I know better than to play the games early and get achievements that might tip off MS when I eventually go online. Could I play an early game offline with no HD or memory unit just to try it out?

Wouldn't you have to sign into a gamertag to play the game though?

No profile needed. I've tried out a few discs since I got my modded console a few days ago. It always asks you to sign in but I just decline and play.
Of course you can't save....
