For many of you with the dreaded RLOD problem may have heard about the X-Clamp fix. There is a kit you can purchase online for 14.99, but what if you dont have 14.99 to shell out? Thats where my poor ass comes in to save the day!
First lets examine the kit you buy for 14.99. This kit includes:
4 pieces of Stainless Steel Washers 1mm thick.
4 pieces of Distance Washers made of Nylon 1mm thick.
4 pieces of Spring washers made of Spring Steel 5mm.
4 pieces of low Lens Head Stainless Steel Machine Screws 5mm x 10mm with a low heigth Lens Head.
Now with their instructions they want you to remove the mounts off the heat sink yadda yadda, along with the necessary cleaning of the chip with thermal grease replacement. Well lets keep in mind were poor but not that poor so we're gonna do this without their kit:P
All we need are 4 spring loaded screws:P
So we got our box broken down, clamps off, heatsink and chip cleaned and readied for new grease.
So what are we gonna do about this wretched clamp? Throw it in the trash cuz we dont need it. Instead were gonna goto the hardware store (or if you got one layin around) get some spring loaded screws about four (should cost around 4 bucks) I found mine on an old P4 machine.
now using a pair of wire snips I start at the top of the spring and at about the begining of the 3 loop from the top I cut the spring in half and save the portion I cut. Do this 3 more times. Now we should have 4 spring halves that are about 2 & a Half mm length.
Now go ahead place your thermal grease on your chip and place the heat sink on the board, while holding the heatsink against the chip flip the board over, you should now see the 4 legs of the heatsink. Now we are going to take our half springs and place them on top of the legs on the bottom of the board, (all while still holding the heatsink with the board up upside down) Now place the board back into the metal casing with the half springs still on the heatsink posts. with all this done you should now be able to place back the torc screws you removed to get the board out of the case back into the case except now there will be some tention between the heatsink and the torc screw, use a cross tension method when tightning them down and remember not too tight cuz we dont want to damage the board.
You can do it their way but I recommend leaving your fan runnin over the cpu and not the gpu, considering thats what you want baked
Also, I have had a few systems that came back with the RLOD after this fix, What I did to fix them is to take 8 pennies or 8 metal slugs (Penny width of course)and wrap them in elctrotape in groups of 2 and super glue them to the 4 memory chips under the xbox 360 motherboard then redo the baking trick & viola! If you research you will find some xbox 360 are plagued with ram issues that cause RLOD so always check your codes first before attempting any fix.
Hope this helps some it helped me make a lot of money:P
