I live in Australia.

Makes it difficult to get a Turtle Beach or Astro headset.

I was thinking...
Couldn't I just buy a 2.5mm jack from a hobby shop and wire it with a $20 headset with a Mic?

Yes, but a $20 headset doesn't sound as good as a $100 headset. Also you'll need a way to feed the audio to the headset.

You can get a cheap headset (the ones that cover your ears like the turtle beach)plugged into your tv and wear your regular MS headset under it, this is what alot of my friends do as it sounds almost the same as the overpriced turtle beach headsets.
