I have an old xbox 360 with a samsung drive in it. I want to use it to rip games but powering it sees to beca royal pain. The box it came out of had the RROD and when I turn it on it shuts off by itself after about 1 minute. I really hate opening up my good xbox to power it that way everytime I want to use it. I don't want to shell out like 30 bucks for the connectivity kit either. Does anyone know of a cheap way of powering this drive. Or maybe even a workaround of my old box shutting off.

Just thought I would clarify what my box does before it turns itself off. When I first turn it on all 4 lights on the front flash red. Then a few seconds later just the bottom and top left (if the box is laying flat), then a few seconds after that the fans turn off and then it is just the top and bottom left lights that blink red but the drive has no power anymore. I'm thinking the box is shutting itself down to prevent damage but I don't care about the box I just want it to power the drive. This is what I wanted to get around.

Do you have the AV cable plug in on the xbox? When i first got my box I didnt know that i had to have my av cable plugged in and that is why my xbox was turning off. And if you want a dedicated 800 drive tehn i would suggest what supra suggested above. I got my power connected v3 at diygadget.com for $14 with code xboxscene

I don't think it's the AV cord. When I flash my other xbox I just have the power cord and it stays on just fine. I just don't want to spend money on something that I could possibally use instead. Hopefully someone will know why it is shutting itself down and how to disable it from doing so. Thanks for the sugesstion though.

You need an AV/HDMI cord plugged in. But it's not worth the hassle to disassemble your xbox every time you want to rip a game.

All 4 flashing means the av is unplugged and the console will shut off after a few minutes on older consoles. But, with your lights changing to 2 blinking that mean you have other problems.

But yeah, I'm with the others. Get the power adapter. Myself, I use an original T.X. 1.3 connectivity kit I bought back in '06. I use it to power all the drives I flash and rip with.

For the actual power cable I use an adapter that came with a ide/sata to usb kit I bought. It's nice because this power cable just happens to have an off/on switch. Works great when I need to quickly power off/on the drive while flashing.

If you do it fast enough, you don't need it plugged in. Keep the av plugged in if you don't want to brick a drive.
