Answer this question with thought and reason.
Would piracy be lowered and more games bought if the games were priced lower?
Example of an answer-you normally buy one game a month, well this month has-Call of duty/assassin's creed/l4d- all coming out in the same month so you can only buy one.how do you get around this?you pirate so you can get all three games.however if games were only 20 dollars you could buy all three games and be satisfied. I truthfully believe piracy would be cut sharply if games had lower prices. How do i defend this. Well I for one (along with 5 friends around me with modded xbox's) would definitely never of modded my xbox if games were 20 or 30 dollars instead of 60.
Please i would love to hear other people's opinion and start a once a day question to discuss how improvements for all of us that could be made

Ironically, part of the reason games are so expensive is because of piracy. Also, the latest, greatest games take over a year to develop. Just assuming salary costs for a team of 40 people (which is small), you're looking at $2,000,000 - assuming a modest salary for each development team member....add in licensing costs, legal costs, promotional expenses, marketing, porting costs (if you develop for multiple consoles)....games are not cheap to make in the first place, I honestly think the price tag of a game is justified.
$60 for 10 hours of entertainment is pretty good...$6 an hour is cheaper than a movie.

The price of games isn't unreasonable IMO. If you select games carefully, you'll easily get your money's worth. I paid £26 for MW2 brand new. I'd spend more than that on one night down the pub, but I'll be playing MW2 for months. Some games on the SNES cost as much as games do now.
I think people would still mod their consoles if games were $10 each, because free is better than spending 10 bucks per game. The same argument used to be used with CDs. "£14.99 is too much for a CD!", but now you can get CDs for less than half that price and people still download them. You see it a lot with independent PC games. They're 5 or 10 bucks to buy, but people pirate them anyway.
$20 wouldn't give companies a good chance of getting a return on their investment anyway. A lot of games don't earn their dev costs back as it is and I don't think more than 3 times as many people would buy the game to compensate for the price drop from 60 to 20 dollars.

Not true as games costs as much back in the day....Atari 2600 games were expensive and usually one person did everything. While I do agree production values have gone up and such. What about the games that basically update every year like the maddens, Guitar heros and such? Those should be DLC and also what about rushed games? With the ability to download a patch it is so much easier to release a buggy game and work on the fixes latter on down the line. Now that gaming is more main stream we should be seeing price drops.
What is more profitable selling 200,000 units at $60 a piece or selling a million for $20 a piece? Costs are the same as well as production with both but the more you make in bulk the less it costs. Also if all games go to download only how much are they going to charge. Xbox games costs anywhere from $19.99-29.99. Why these games are old you download put on the hard drive so now you no longer have production costs because you can put said game on hard drive and play. Personally I feel the game business has done it to themselves. Drop the prices and you will push more units. What would you rather have? 3 games for $60 or 1 game for $60? easy choice.
Of course there will always be the ones who feel they dont need to pay for anything and continue to pirate but I think it will stop a lot of it.

Nobody forces you to buy Madden every year. If they weren't very successful games and big sellers, they wouldn't keep making them.

This is where the problem lies. It doesn't even matter what the price for games is, it's almost human nature "to get it as cheap as possible". And "free" is as cheap as it gets. Sadly, if games were $10, people would still download/rip & burn, because cheaper is better and a they usually have more than one console in the house.
For people like me, (I've had cartridge back-up units for SNES, Genesis & N64, a modified Saturn, PS1, PS2, GameCube, Xbox, and now Wii & 360) it's habitual to mod. The hack, search, download & burn process has become (in retrospect)one of my hobbies. The process is "fun" to PC users, just the same as other PC processes. It's something to do. A hobby. BTW, DreamCast didn't have to be modded.
I have no problem giving money to the game companies that in my opinion "deserve" their money. I own about 30 retail Xbox 360 games (MW2, GoW2, Halo 3, GTA IV, RE5, Forza 3, etc) but there is no way I can justify $60 for Def Jam Icon, MK vs DC, Raiden IV, Terminator Salvation, X-Blades, etc. And a lot of poorly thought out games, extremely short games, extra buggy games, just plain bad games, are knowingly released at 60 bucks, and I just can't go for it.
I guess I'll always be the same, buy AND rip.

Even if games were 20 dollars you think a majority or the people who do it now still would?I think only like 10-20% would

I think a lot of people would buy genuine games if they were cheaper as they would way up the pros and cons of modding and the risk wouldn't be worth it especially if ban waves like the current one were a regular occurrence.

I personally wouldn't stop modding if games were $5. Oh wait you can get games for $5. I think its curiosity that drives the community. People will try anything just to see if they can do it. The accomplishment far out weighs the risk in this case. I have to say if MW2 was $20 i would have bought it!

Hmmm you would still mod even if your live got banned every week (since that is what would happen if you kept buying xbox's right now) and games were only 5 dollars? i doubt it lol

The end result is that if modding is able to be done, and the end cost is cheaper than retail, a LOT of people are gonna do it.
