My mates XBOX 360 Lite-On failed on him the other day and as I've had quite a bit of experience in XBOX modding he's asked me to replace it for him with the BENQ VAD6038 DVD Drive that he purchased. Thanks for any help you guys can give me.
Just really need a confirmation that this is how it is done as this is my first DVD Drive swap:
1) Get Key from Lite-On using Jungleflasher (probe, ck3 kit etc.) and create Inquiry etc. files. -autoload files
2) Spoof the BENQ VAD6038 Firmware with said created files.
3) Save now spoofed firmware.
4) Flash newly purchased BENQ drive with firmware.
5) Re-install and voila.
Correct? :)

What exactly is wrong with the Lite-ON? If he plays on live he might want to replace it with another Lite-ON.

Seems to be able to play music CD's and DVD's alright but fails to even recognise XBOX 360 games when they're put in. When a game is put in it whirls up, makes a bizzare clicking noise and then "Reading" reverts back to "Open Tray". I took a guess and said it must be the laser lens faulting. Could I be incorrect?
I thought it was 100% safe as long as the drive was spoofed first?

Its not 100% safe if you are using iextreme, although i've personally done this and not had any problems.
If you plan on just using the ofw to play originals then i would not worry too much.

Well he knows the general implications of what he's doing and that there is always a chance of being smacked by the ban stick. As long as I'm not putting him in any direct danger of being immediately banned.
I'd persuade him to buy a replacement laser but he's already gone and got this BENQ drive.

Well i've personally replaced dead Sammys and Lite-ons with brand new benq's and not been banned or had problems playing on live, but that doesnt mean im right to do it, and it doesnt mean that you wont be the unlucky one who gets banned.
At the end of the day its your own decision and each will have their own preference.

Yeah it's true, I personally never play on my 360 as I have a kickass PC but this guys a slight CoD 4 fanatic. (Once again PC > XBOX 360 for CoD 4 in my opinion) :)
That said, I'm told that a Microsoft perma ban only bans the MAC address of the XBOX 360 being played on at the time. I've seen an XBOX 360 premium (base unit only) being sold for as little as 50 quid, or an easily fixable RROD base unit for £20. So for the same price as an XBOX 360 game you could have yourself back on XBOX Live in as short time as it takes for them to post it to you.

Yeah thats the way most of us see it, you take the risk and be prepared to pay the piper again if the worst happens.
And also the price of new 360's is being cut again so i suppose its getting easier in that way

I'd probably keep the banned XBOX as my single player machine and the new one un-modified to play the only 2 live games worth playing, CoD 4 and Halo 3, haha opinion of myself of course. :)
Mind you I bet the majority of people "need" to flash their gamerscore to the rest of the XBOX Live public and would be opposed to this idea. ;)
Cheers for all the help guys.

You could try a POT Calibration on the laser but you will probably end up replacing the laser anyway.
But it is up to you what you want to do. Dealing with drive replacements, it is always smart to replace the drive with the exact same type of drive. The Lite-ON is said to have hidden commands that are sent/received. I believe ix1.5 was designed to cater for those commands.
