I have an Xbox 360 with a problem. It will not display video when powered on. Now I've done some research and apparently the RROD fix known as the "x-clamp fix" also fixes this as no video issue as well, as it's a GPU related.
Here's the thing, to increase my chances of having success with this I am going to try to explain this in the fullest detail so I apologize in advance if this post drags on and becomes long.
From the beginning, I researched how to do this 'x-clamp fix' and so I went out and bought the necessary parts. So I took apart the Xbox down to the motherboard, the removed the x-clamps, took off the heat sinks and cleaned the thermal paste residue from them.
After that I applied the new thermal paste from said purchased parts. I made sure not to over-apply the paste. Then I made the 6 holes in the bottom of the metal casing bigger in order to make the screws fit.
I then began to screw the heat sinks on making sure there are level with the GPU and CPU chips.
I then attempted the next step which is to "cook" the Xbox by connected the DVD drive and powering it on without connecting the fan to get the RROD which I did.
Now from what I understand, after 2-2.5 minutes from powering on the system and seeing the RROD, it is supposed to turn from the RROD into just 2 red lights which means the xbox is overheating.
Now for the problem, as I'm typing this my Xbox has been powered on for about 20-30 minutes and it still has the RROD. It just will not overheat. I do not understand why as I've followed the several guides I've found including videos down to a tee.
Other details:
When I loosen up the screws holding the heat sinks, the Xbox turns on but shows no video which is the original problem.
When the screws are a little tighter and the Xbox shows the RROD, the light on the power brick is orange, not sure if that makes a difference.
tighten the screws unplug the fans let it run could take up to 20 minutes to overheat. best thing to do is take all that back off, get you a heatgun heat the area around the cpu and the gpu and the ram about 20 seconds each section, let it set for 20 minutes turn over and do the other side. i do this all the time, i usually start back up with green lights. but i do not replace the xclamps, i bend them back out and put them back on. i fix 2 0r 3 of these a week, and i have only had one returned.
