Safe to do system update?

I'm running iXtreme 1.61 on a BenQ drive. Want to play Just Cause 2 backup and it says console update required. My box is not banned, but I never go on Live. I just want to make sure I don't lose the ability to install games to hard drive. How should I do this update? Is it trying to do the Fall 2009 update?
Also, should I bother with LT? 1.61 seems to play everything and I really don't care about Live.

I've never had any problems with the updates. I always accept them and still going LIVE strong. If you can connect to LIVE, but the the update only pops ups when you when you try to play Just Cause 2, then it's a game update, and if you ask me, game updates are always OK.

You can always proceed with the system update. It has nothing to do with DVD drive's firmware.

my current drive firmware is 1.61 with older dashboard (which is not support wave 6 games) so can I just update to latest dashboard for wave 6 game or, do need to upgrade latest firmware LT /1.7 1st ?
...these Game wave3/4/5/6 require firmware or dashboard updates ?

Wave 6 plays on 1.61 just fine.

just so you guys know,,maybe you do allready,,you can now install games back onto the harddrive with your banned xbox,,thanks to the new update,,,cool sony takes stuff away,,microsoft gives it back,,

yea i just found this out,,didnt believe the guy who told me until i tried it myself,,thats cool of MS to put it back,,saves from doing the hack way,,

I think they put it back because they shouldn't of taken it away in the first place ;)
