I was happy with iextreme 1.41 for a while until the 3rd wave games came out which forced me to upgrade. Since 1.6 is out, i thought i might as well go straight to the latest one. I updated to 1.6 with no problems but when i play a game, the video lags so much and then eventually stops and i can hear the drive making very loud noises in the process.
I thought if its only the video then i can cope with it....today i was playing a game and it paused and crashed in the game!
I know 1.41 was only 8x while 1.6 is 12x so that probably explains the drive noise, but im not sure about the video lag.

Has anyone had this problem before? Would downgrading to 1.51 fix these issues?

Any problems with your drive or media will be amplified at 12x. Video lag means the laser is having a hard time reading the disc. Could be a dirty/failing laser, disc slipping on the spindle, bad burn, or crap media.

I'm using Ritek but I've also used TDK and get the same problem. If its a failing laser, i guess i need to replace the drive. This is silly question but can i get any drive and flash the firmware or does it have to be a Samsung ms25? Can it be a Samsung ms28?

Cheers

Myself, I'd never use TDK or Ritek.

TDK

Ritek

The problem is neither manufactures their own media. It's outsourced to multiple manufacturers and most produce nothing but crap. CMC is probable the worse offender. Well, Ritek does... but not solely. It's the same with 95% of the media out there.

The best way to buy media is by the media id, not the brand name. Unfortunately that info isn't available if you're picking it up off a store shelf. So each time you walk in to a store to grab a new spindle it's a crap shoot.

You can replace your drive. Actually I'd recommend replacing it. The ms25 is ancient. I'd suggest either a Benq or Lite On. Any Samsung is going to be loud and Hitachi's don't offer bad flash recovery, meaning they can be easily rendered useless during the flashing process.

Thanks for that. To flash the new drive using jungleflasher, do i just "open target firmware" which is the firmware that im currently running on my ms25? I know jungleflasher writes the new firmware based on the original firmware so that the serial numbers are the same but in this instance, i want them to be different.
Could you please point me to a tutorial on how to do this? I think I'm going to go for a new Benq drive.

Cheers
