You could try installing to the HDD. I don't really know much about POT calibration.

If you continue to have disc read issues, I would recommend getting a BenQ. They are cheap on ebay and work like a dream.

There are a few things you can do:

1.) Use a different type of media (Verbatims are the highest quality)
2.) Clean the laser lens
3.) Do the pot tweak

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you do not attempt the pot tweak unless you have a multimeter. Set it to 20k ohms. Put the two tips on the contact points for your type of laser. Take your base reading and write it down. Now adjust it down by .25 to .5 ohms at a time. After each adjustment, hook the drive back up and try it again. You generally don't want to go below 2.8 ohms or your laser will burn out more quickly. You want to keep the resistance as high as possible while still retaining the ability to read backups.

There are pot calibration guides out there with photos of the contact points for your reference. But those are the basics.

Also, I'd advise getting a new laser off of the internet before buying a new drive. It is easier to replace, requires no flashing, and is about 3x cheaper.

$38 on new discs -- Check
$15 on burn after burn that showed as a DVD -- Check
$11 on new laser -- Check
$28 on new multimeter -- Check
