Simple Question about 360 DVD Drives

Hi all, I've recently started having severak disc read errors on all my games for the 360. I've done a bit of reading around and tried several things but none seem to be working. I've decided I wanna try and put a new drive in. The only thing I was wondering is whether I will just be able to straight swap or whether I will need to flash etc. for it to work like I have read on several other forums.

I have a BenQ Vad6038 drive, so if I got exactly the same drive and just swapped like for like would this work?

If not how simple is it to flash etc and get it working? And will doing so affect my Live account?

As im here: you need to dump the key from your Benq drive and flash the key onto your new DVD drive. I would recommend using the Jungleflasher tutorial but as i can see you dont like reading. I would advice paying a shop and getting it done properly.

So I am new at the whole xbox mod thing.

My drive died and it looks like I ordered a dif drive from the one that is in there now...do you have to have the same manufacturer drive to replace it. most sites I look at are all about hacking the drive, I merely just want to replace my crappy drive that sux dont want to steal or play "backups"

Aside from sending it back to microsoft to keep it legit, you will still have to dump your drive key and inject the new drive with that key. Otherwise, if the keys dont match what originally came on your box, the drive wont work. Microsoft added security keys to the drives so you could not just go out and slap any drive you wanted in there.

Thats pretty much what I figured, my big question is do the keys work between dif drives? or do I need to have the exact same drive?

I got no prob dumping the key just wanted to make sure...ton of sites about hacking to use as a back up. I merely am just trying to replace.

I am a reg pc modder/tech not expecting this to be hard just trying to find the facts

the key can be spoofed to work in any drive.
