Hi All,
I really hope this isn't too much of an inconvenience. I tried reading the stickies, but I got so lost and confused it was ridiculous - I did not even know which guide to read first. I'm hoping this kind community will be able to assist.
Here's my situation - I have two xboxes (both 360 fats) - one is just boxed up sitting there, and the other is used to play online and to use with Xbox Live. I would like to softmod my second Xbox so that I can play my backed up games, and lend it to my brother. I do not mind if it gets banned from Xbox Live as it will only be used for single player.
I'm trying to get an idea of a true beginner's guide, from start to finish, for newbs. If possible, could you guys reference what threads I should read?
I'm assuming I need to find out my dvd-drive, then flash it. How do I go about doing that? Also, do I need to have a certain firmware? Can I update to the new dashboard first before flashing? Is there any restrictions on which xbox I can use to do this, which dashboard update/firmware, or which games? Is it possible to get around the xbox live banning and still use it to play Xbox Live and download content?
I know I am asking for a lot, so i would really appreciate any patience and assistance.

You have to have a compatible motherboard or sata card in order to flash your dvd drive. I havent kept up on which ones work but I am quite sure there is a tutoral on flashing your dvd drive on the fourms. Try searching. Flashing DVD drive (model of dvd drive) tutorial, or if you dont know how to identify which model you have, search how to find model of dvd drive.
Comp
-6-core 3.2 AMD, 12gb DDR3, Geforce femi 560ti, Running Win7 x64
Laptop

Nelmeco, thanks for your reply - I appreciate it.
Please let me clarify what you just said so I have it right - in order for me to flash the xbox drive, I need to first make sure that my motherboard and sata card on my laptop is compatible to do this? Let's say I have a mobile i7 sandybridge, with a sata port - does this mean I would be able to do it or it would depend on if it's compatible?
As for xbox live, if they ban my account on the modded console, does that mean my account on my unmodded console is also banned?
I know my questions must sound so stupid, but this is all brand new to me. Thanks all!

I don't think you will have much success with any onboard sata with a laptop. You will have to either use desktop with via6421 chipset or other compatible chipset, or get a usbpro and use it to flash drive. In most cases they ban just your console in some they may ban both console and gamertag, but unlikely I've only been banned once and it was console only.

Thanks - I'm a bit disappointed that I won't be able to do it with my brand new laptop (HP DV6TQE), since I don't have a desktop - it looks like usbpro is my only option.
Do you think you can provide more details on USBPRO?

Usbpro link you might also want to look in to a connectivity kit for supplying power to drive, you can use xbox but it will set a flag on your console for the sata cable being unhooked. And depending on what drive you have you might need probe for getting key if you have liteon. I'm not positive about your laptop not being able to work with drive so it wouldn't hurt to test and find out, cause all of this stuff could start to add up not real expensive but probably near $130 range shipped.

if you only want to mod one box then it's probably cheaper and faster to pay someone to mod it for you. craig's list is usually the easiest way to find someone local.
but if you have to re-flash it in the future it's a bit more convenient if you can do it yourself.

Hi All - would you guys recommend me updating my XBox before flashing it? I want to be able to play Kinect games with it, and I think I would need to update it. Would the most recent update cause an issue for me when I try to flash?

Okay - Im going to purchase the X360USB PRO
Do you guys think I should purchase any of the other things to get started? I only have a laptop to do all this on. Would I need the PSU, probe add on, or xbox opening tools?
