I payed someone (about 2-3 years ago) to softmod my 360 so it would play my backed up games. in the last 2 years i haven't used my 360 for anything other than playing xvid/dvix movies/tv shows. I also have not kept up with the various updates to that softmod. Today for the first time in years i got a couple of new games NHL 10 and Need For Speed Shift. When i put either game in my console, it shows up with the option to play DVD? It does not recognize that the disc is a game. When i choose the play dvd option it takes me to the 360 dvd player and says attempting to read disc and thats it.
any ideas why this is happening? do i need to update my softmod even though these are store bought originals and not backups?
I have seen other posts with similar problems but all relating to playing backups not originals.
I also have no information on what mod was installed or any other information corresponding to the mod.
two things --when you got your 360 modded--they made a mistake and now your dvd drive only plays movies. If you did however ever play a game after it was modded, then your laser on your 360 is going bad and would need to replace it or buy a new drive. this is probably the case.
If you can play a movie then it suggests firmware, strange it doesn't recognize originals, best person to ask would be wabashman,i'm sure he wouldn't mind answering if you send him a pm assuming he doesn't see your topic
you need to do a pot calabration or get a new laser i just did a pot calabration on 2 dvd drives with same problem they are working fine now. there is plenty of tutorails on how to do this and if you dont have a multimeter i have seen ones for like £5 not much!!
I can play movies fine, and xvid/divx files too. Could it still be the laser? i'm really not sure if i'm comfortable replacing the laser or even the drive (i honestly don't even know how to open the sucker up) I'm taking the console back to the guy who modded it for the updates, i'm hoping that works. I also sent a PM to Wabashman as per your suggestion.
thanks again everyone, i'll let you all know what happens after the updates
its not the firmware but when you get it updated ask the guy to do a pot calabration thats all it should need if that doesnt work (it will) then a new laser is the nxt cheapest option.
