The stealth version won't boot games if the stealth files are missing or if the video partition doesn't match known data, which is why people had to use the activate.iso boot disc for a while. It protected the user from booting a bad backup that could get them banned.

oh that's why.
does the new ixtreme 1.7 do that? not run the backup if it isn't stealth, that is.
All the ixtreme do that. They check if the disc is stealthed (but you still need to secure it, stealth and secure isn't the same), and then refuses to boot it if it's not. You'll need to update the firmware or patch your games when new waves come out, meaning you'll need to keep up with the times.
Unstealth means it's not stealthed and M$ WILL detect you; but you don't need to even insert security feature in there or stealth it. You won't need to update the firmware or patch the games all the time. It's great if you don't want to go on live (and really, how many games REALLY need live to play, other than games like MW2 or Forza 3? Does Darksiders, FFXIII, Dragon Age, Prototype?) and you don't want to deal with the hassle - especially if you don't have the hardware to flash firmware (it's a lot of stuff to buy and a lot of programs to deal with).
I'm computer savvy (comp student), but I'd just rather not deal with the headache. I buy games like Borderlands or whatnot, the others...well.
